Channel 5

How BeBanjo helped Channel 5 centralise their content management system and scale up their content operations without substantially growing their teams.

Name:
Channel 5
Launch:
1997
Industry:
Television
About:
British free-to-air television network. It is the fifth national terrestrial channel in the United Kingdom and is owned by Channel 5 Broadcasting Ltd, which is operated by ViacomCBS Networks UK & Australia.
Headquarters:
London, UK
BeBanjo customer since:
2009

The problems Channel five was facing before they started working with BeBanjo were all rooted in their fragmented content ecosystem. Lacking a centralized platform to manage schedules, metadata, images, and workflows, Channel 5 teams had to manually align their catch-up services between their linear and non-linear channels, causing several bottlenecks in their content delivery pipeline.

“Movida’s APIs are super simple, very straightforward. They're easily navigable. And the best thing is that they're automatically published. So all of the information is always up to date.”

With BeBanjo’s Movida, Channel 5 implemented an integrated, end-to-end VOD content delivery system that automatically updates from linear schedules and provides a platform for remote collaboration. In Movida, scheduling teams can easily see what's coming up in the linear schedule, know what status it is, and select content for VOD scheduling on a per series or on a per-show basis. Additionally, thanks to Movida’s intuitive APIs, Channel 5’s now centralized content ecosystem updates dynamically from upstream, and the content management teams can rest assured that catch-up rules are always in sync with the corresponding content in the linear schedules.

Increasing Operational Efficiency with Movida

Channel 5 has several different content types: content from affiliate partners, linear content, VOD content with rights and catch-up rules on a per-platform, or per-service basis. This is all handled by a handful of people in Movida who work to ensure that all data and rights are valid, and the workflows are correct.

Movida integrates with Channel 5's linear presentation system and automatically produces multi-platform schedules based on predefined catch-up rules (eg.: all episodes of a specific show to be made available for 7-day catch-up on iOS service). The integrations connect Movida and Channel 5’s own proprietary CMS, which deals with editorial metadata, and feed it via APIs back into Movida. Patrick Gartland, Channel 5’s Content Solutions Manager stressed the user-friendliness of BeBanjo’s APIs: “Movida’s APIs are super simple, very straightforward. They're easily navigable. And the best thing is that they're automatically published. So all of the information is always up to date.”

“There's always been a really close relationship between Channel 5 and BeBanjo. After all these years BeBanjo knows our systems and how we work so well that our needs have almost been anticipated in some cases.”

Through interacting directly with Movida via APIs, Channel 5’s content processing partners receive job creation events automatically, along with the relevant metadata for a particular job. Movida APIs work in tandem to create multiple bespoke actions, so Channel 5 knows when something is initiated, updated, re-delivered or taken down. “So again, that's proven invaluable, because it just takes away that pick up the phone and say ‘we need to take something down.’ It cuts down on the email traffic that we have between ourselves and our partners and our end platforms,” Patrick added.

BeBanjo’s Tools Help Channel 5 Scale Their Content Operations

In the past few years, Channel 5 has departed from being primarily a catch-up service and started to scale up their affiliate broadcast content. Having 16 different affiliate partners now, Channel 5 has become a destination for affiliate content and a home for Channel brands, rather than solely a catch-up service for UK linear broadcasters. And thanks to streamlining their content operations with the BeBanjo products, Channel 5 managed to scale up the amount of data going through their backend system without having to substantially grow their content management teams.

More Than a Decade Long Partnership

BeBanjo has been a proud business partner of Channel 5 for more than 12 years now. When we ask Patrick about Channel 5’s experience of working with BeBanjo, he is very generous with his remarks:

“There's always been a really close relationship between Channel 5 and BeBanjo. After all these years BeBanjo knows our systems and how we work so well, that our needs have almost been anticipated in some cases. And I suppose from a product perspective, it's always been a very proactive and transparent discussion. So yeah, it's always been really collaborative, really open, really friendly. And excellent professionalism as well.”
